Interview

“I just hope I don't get lost”

Jan Brabec was only four years old when he got his first BMX, and it was set to trigger a lifelong passion for bikes. At seven, having already won his first competitions, he got a first taste of motocross, and would go to enjoy a huge amount of national and international success in the sport throughout his teenage years. With his father, he even travelled to California to pick up advice from motocross legend Jeremy McGrath at the age of just 12. In recent years, the 35-year-old has branched out into cross-country, and his presence on social media led to a meeting with fellow Czech competitor Martin Macik, one of the Dakar's rising stars in the truck category. Jan ended up joining Martin's Big Shock Racing team, starting out at the 2017 Merzouga Rally and taking part in his maiden Dakar a year ago. No stranger to the rigours of elite riding, he came 39th, finishing as the best Czech rider in the bikes and the ninth rookie. After an impressive season which saw him place fourth at the FIM Bajas World Cup, he returns to the Dakar looking to improve on his 2018 performance.

“This is my 31st season of racing, so it's been a long time. I joined Big Shock Racing two years ago through Instagram! Martin and I had been liking each other's photos so that's how we met. The team is perfect. Last year was pretty good. I finished 39th and I was the top-ranked Czech rider, so it was fun. I made a couple of navigation mistakes and I got a two-hour penalty on the first stage. But it wasn't too difficult, I felt very good. This year I was fourth at the Bajas World Cup so I think I'm really fast right now. I'm not too sure about navigation though. You know what Dakar is like, it's so tricky, I just hope I don't get lost. I really enjoyed Peru last year, I like the sand a lot. I'm looking forward to getting back there and riding in the dunes."
