Interview

“I think it's better to have Javier with us because he's a local guy”

Having been involved in motorsport for almost 40 years, Pedro de Mello Breyner has never shied away from a challenge. Last year, he and Pedro Velosa became the first Portuguese pair to take part in the side-by-side (SxS) category, but their Dakar ended in disappointment on just the second stage, as they found themselves stuck in a hole surrounded by steep dunes. This year, Pedro has teamed up with local Peruvian doctor Javier Uribe in a bid to make it through to the finish line in Lima. In 2018, Javier enjoyed an impressive Dakar debut with fellow Ica native Juan Carlos Uribe Ramos, although the local favourites had to quit in the latter stages of the rally. Pedro, now 59, got his first taste of motorsport as a youngster, taking part in karting and rally races before working his way up to national and international events. Along with brothers Manuel and Thomaz, he even took part in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1997 and 1999, placing as high as third in the GT2 category. Now, with Javier's help, he is looking to strike another achievement off his bucket list by getting to the end of the world's toughest rally.

“Although you might not realise it from our name, the team is actually all from Portugal. Except my co-driver of course! I think it's better to have Javier with us because he's a local guy. He's from Ica and he knows the dunes and the desert like the back of his hand. This year the Dakar will be 70% sand, so his experience will be very important. Last year was very disappointing. It was far too short because we got stuck on the second stage and had to abandon. So this year the main goal is to finish. We've made a few modifications to the Yamaha but it's essentially the same.”
