“The Dakar is a different monster!”

At 26 years of age, Skyler Howes represents the future of American off-road racing. US champion last year, fifth of the Baja 1000 and winner of the Sonora rally, time has come for the Utah kid to take on the Dakar. Inspired by Chris Blais and the late Kurt Caselli who told him all about the mysteries of the event, Howes has achieved a first goal and that’s to go to the Dakar. To do so, he’ll be part of the Garrett Off Road racing team with Garrett Poucher as his team mate and he’ll be riding a KTM 450 prepared by Ondrej Klymciw. Now the objective is to do well and the young man is pretty confident and ambitious: top 20 would be good but the goal is higher.

“I started watching the Dakar with my dad on TV. Then as I was riding for Chris Blais, I got interested in doing it. I was a good friend of Kurt Caselli and he gave me the biggest motivation to go. The first goal was to make it to the start. Now I have to do well. I want to do it for as long as I can. First I have to finish but I’m ambitious. Of course you never know until you get there. Top 20 would be good, top 15 is the goal and top 10 would be a big deal. My confidence is high based on all my training. I grew up in the sand. I’m prepared for how big the dunes are and I tend to perform better as the days go by. I enjoy long days on my bike. But the Dakar is a different monster so I probably won’t be riding at my fullest. My biggest concern is to have a mechanical issue or to crash. Rally racing isn’t a team sport but it helps to have Garrett (Poucher) at my side.”
