In daily life Maik Willems is the owner of a hotel chain with 33 hotels and a total of over 3000 rooms. Offering comfort and hospitality is his usual priority. But in the Dakar Maik Willems wouldn’t even think of changing his tent in the bivouac for a hotel room. In his first attempt in 2014 Willems had to withdraw from the Dakar with the rest day in sight. Not wanting a repeat of the technical nightmare he had that first year, he bought a solid and reliable car: an Overdrive Toyota. Speed wasn’t the most important ingredient for Willems, he just wanted to get to the finish. And he did, in both 2015, 2016 and 2017, by consistency and keeping his head cool. Willems will again be with co-driver Rob van Pelt – ‘the man with the golden hands’ according to Willems – who has managed to finish the Dakar on a bike, as a truck driver and as a navigator in a truck and a car.
M.W.: “I only started rallies in 2013. I was watching the Dakar on TV and told myself: ‘what a fool I am not to go’… The Dakar is a fantastic adventure. It is like a holiday to me, as we get to cross the most beautiful landscapes one could ever imagine. I’m enjoying every minute. Not just the landscape, also the way of life. The result is of no meaning to me, only regarding the starting position in the next stage. It’s just a lot easier when you are a bit further to the front. The biggest difference to daily life is that in my business I have to think about the bigger plan for the long-term. In the Dakar the only goal is to make it to the next day. That’s all that counts.”
