Interview

“The adventure side of the Dakar is very important”

Since making his Dakar debut with Aurelijus Petraitis in 2003, Antanas Juknevičius has become arguably Lithuania's most famous participant in the world's biggest rally, paving the way for talented drivers such as Benediktas Vanagas, Vaidotas Zala and Edvinas Juskauskas. After three editions as a co-driver, Antanas got behind the wheel himself in 2014, improving from 56th that year to a superb 12th place in 2018. He is now looking forward to a change of scenery as the Dakar heads to Saudi Arabia. Antanas developed a passion for racing in his early 20s, going on to win multiple Lithuanian championships before discovering the world of rally raid and participating in a host of FIA World Cup events. He was sadly unable to compete in any rallies in 2019, but still made his annual trip to the UAE for the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, where he trained and helped out Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi. He also worked as an FIA competitors' relations office at Rally Kazahkstan. Despite losing his main sponsor Craft Bearings ahead of Dakar 2020, the 45-year-old privateer is confident that he and co-driver Darius Vaičiulis can still enjoy another successful outing in their Overdrive Hilux. Darius is certainly no stranger to extreme sport, having completed the Seven Summits challenge, which involves climbing the highest mountain on all seven continents. In their fourth Dakar together, the Lithuanian duo will similarly be hoping to hit their peak in the dunes of the Arabian desert.

A.J.: “We're looking forward to it! You have completely new adventures when you change locations. Even if you're a top racer, the adventure side of the Dakar is very important. There are lots of things we'll be facing for the first time, and I think that is the sense of Dakar. I remember the first edition in 2009 after we moved from Africa to Latin America. Perhaps it wasn't the best in terms of the tracks, but it was a big challenge for all of us. I have very positive memories of it, so now I'm looking forward to Saudi Arabia. After 10 years, moving to a completely new country with a new desert is very nice. We have lost our main partner Craft Bearings, so I think we will have our smallest Dakar budget of the past five years. But we're staying positive, I look at it philosophically. It's important to get a good result and communicate effectively. I'm sure everything will be ok. I did almost nothing this year, I just went along to watch a few rallies. Lithuania is a country of three million people, and we have five car crews and one biker entering Dakar 2020. They are really incredible figures. The rally now gets a lot of promotion back home, going back to the great job we started doing in 2002. The Dakar is like a religion in Lithuania. The first religion is basketball, but now the second is Dakar, which is good for all of us.”
