Interview

“We have great foundations to build on”

Milan Engel enjoyed his most memorable Dakar to date a year ago when he stormed to a brilliant 15th place in the bikes, finishing as the best Czech rider in the class and claiming a best-ever result for the Moto Racing Group (MRG). The 28-year-old had previously enjoyed mixed fortunes on the world's toughest rally, coming 30th on his debut in 2015 and 34th in the gruelling 2017 edition, but also suffering abandons in 2016 and 2018. Having starred on the Czech offroad and enduro circuits for many years, Milan has now emerged as a solid contender in the world of rally raid. On his website he proudly announces that his greatest ambition is to win the Dakar, although a spin through the dunes with Sam Sunderland last year showed that it's not easy keeping up with the top factory riders! After a solid season, including a second place at the Hellas Rally, Milan is now hoping to make it another successful Dakar for MRG. He'll be riding for the team with two compatriots: Martin Michek, a motocross star who's gearing up for his first tilt at the Dakar in the bikes, and Tomas Kubiena, who's hoping it will be fourth time lucky after three abandons in the quads.

“The top 20 is usually for the factory teams, but there are always going to be riders dropping out. I just didn't expect so many abandons last year! Around 45 per cent of the bikes didn't finish, which proves it wasn't a simple Dakar at all. I'd been aiming to finish somewhere in the 20s, but I rode intelligently and ended up 15th, which I really didn't expect. I took it pretty easy to begin with. Everyone was encouraging me to up the tempo but I wasn't in a hurry, because the Dakar is such a long rally. As it turned out, those tactics paid off! At one point I was with Sam Sunderland. He was also riding smart, but the pace was incredible. You can't even imagine how these top guys cruise along, jumping dunes and all the other crazy stuff they can handle. The best part was probably the last stage, when emotions were flying through the air, and the party with the team just after the finish. It was a great experience, and the whole team deserved to share our success. I achieved the best result in the history of MRG, and I was very happy about it. I think we're among the leading teams, and we have great foundations to build on.”
