Despite his calm attitude, the name of his team sponsor suits him well. Andrew Short showed up on the Dakar last year after a rock star career in American Supercross and Motocross. But that whole new challenge, far from the dirt tracks and SX stadiums that he was used to was certainly a painful one. Despite being “blown away” by the Dakar, its terrain, its bivouacs, its dunes, the American learned rally racing the hard way. Far, according to him, from the best, he suffered a painful crash with two days to go but still carried on with a broken ankle. He heroically reached the finish podium in a promising 17th position that however didn’t satisfy him. Experience is key in such a discipline and Short has since then enjoyed a full year of rally racing with the Husqvarna factory team. Eleventh of the FIM Rally World Championships, he’s carried on improving on a regular basis enjoying a fine 3rd spot at the Desafio Inca in Peru on a terrain that he’ll be glad to renew with come January. The goal now is to be among the best and help out his team mate Pablo Quintanilla if needed.
“I started riding when I was 5 and turned pro at the age of 17. At 18, I packed my bag and decided to race for a living. I enjoyed an amazing career. I fell in love with off-road racing when I came to see the Sonora Rally and I decided to follow my heart. Riding is a passion. It was a dream to be on the Dakar. I was blown away. It was like being on a honeymoon. I had no pressure. But I didn’t do so well. I was far from the best. With two days to go I hit a stone and suffered a big crash, breaking my ankle. I realised immediately it was bad. It was pretty crazy to carry on with a broken ankle and I wouldn’t have done it for anything else. I wanted to at least finish. It’s actually the fourth time I break my ankle but it’s OK. I can walk, I can ride. I’ll probably need surgery when I get older. Last year, everything was new for me. I needed to learn and it didn’t come quickly. I underestimated the pace, the skills of the riders. So it was a honeymoon last year, but this time I need to be competitive. And if I’m good, I’ll continue. If I’m not, I’ll just have to find something else to do. For me a good result isn’t a number, it’s being competitive, it’s being in the race with the top guys. The guys I’m riding against are legends. I’m just the oldest rookie.”
