This stage looks deceptively easy, but there are two dangers lurking beneath the surface: on the one hand, the length of the road section and the very early start, which will sap the energy of the entrants; on the other hand, the return to the sea of dunes of the Empty Quarter, where each kilometre in a special hurts twice or thrice as much. The average speed will nosedive once the field enters the realm of sand. Only a handful of competitors will make it to the bivouac in Shubaytah before the sun goes down.
