No gentle start to the Dakar, which is serving up a marathon stage before the first week is even half done. The first special is an eclectic mix of stony sections, vast expanses of sand and chains of dunes. Finding the right rhythm is easier said than done in this potpourri of fast sections, slower ones and jagged terrain. To rub salt on the wound, the mechanics will only get two hours to work at the finish of the special before the vehicles enter the marathon bivouac and a parc fermé.
