The name Straver is a well-known name in the world of motorsports in the Netherlands. Anton Straver was a successful road racer back in the seventies and eighties. His son Edwin though always preferred the off-road version: motocross, endure and now the Dakar for the second time.
“Last year, when I entered the Dakar for the first time, I found out that the way to the event is much harder and longer than the event itself. I have to combine it with my business as a self-employed maintenance engineer. I could have never done this without the support of my girlfriend Anja. Once you are there you are in a different world and only one thing matters: finish the stage and get to the bivouac to get ready for the next day. Ride, eat, sleep… repeat. The most challenging and exciting about the Dakar is the unknown: at the start of a stage you have no idea of what awaits you. The surroundings, the surface, the circumstances change all the time. The biggest challenge was not to get carried away and withstand the impulse to go faster. This was particularly difficult for someone who has been infected with the speed gen that is in my family’s dna. I’m really proud I made it to the finish in my first attempt and as an Original by Motul.”
