“I’ll be looking to win in T4”
CREW FACTS
H.M.
- This will be Hunter’s first Dakar but he has a huge track record back home. He’s been off-roading since he was 8, starting with quads before him and his brother transitioned to side by sides.
- In 2016 he entered the GNCC series, finishing second in 2017 and winning in 2018.
- In 2019 he started racing the WORCS series, finishing second and then going on to win the King of Hammers at his first attempt.
- With many of his friends: Seth Quintero, Mitch Gutherie, AJ… all regaling him with stories of the Dakar it was almost inevitable that he too would take the rally raid plunge.
- In preparation for the Dakar, he entered this year’s Rallye du Maroc. A few mechanical incidents didn’t do his overall result any favours, but he and co-driver Andrew Short still managed a stage win, plus a second and a third place in the SSV Experimental class (their car wasn’t yet homologated for T4).
A.S.
- American supercross legend Andrew Short showed up on the rally raid scene quite unexpectedly. With absolutely nothing to prove he quietly went about his business, first with the Husqvarna factory team and then with Yamaha, achieving a win on the Rallye du Maroc and a second place on the Silkway Rally among other notable achievements.
- After 5 Dakars on bikes, he then made another unexpected appearance co-driving for the Australian rally driver Molly Taylor in a T4.
- Absent in 2024, he now makes yet another unexpected appearance as Hunter Miller’s co-driver in the Can Am factory team. And given Hunter’s clearly stated ambitions, once again Andrew won’t be there to just make up the numbers.
2025 AMBITIONS
H.M.: “Obviously the Dakar has become much more important in the States and some of my compatriots have had some good results. I’ve always liked the long races and they don’t get much longer than the Dakar. I used to be a huge fan of Andrew (Short) when he was racing supercross and we’re both from Texas, so we even have the same accent! He’s always taken an interest in my racing and been very supportive, so he was a natural choice for co-driver. He’s really into the whole navigation aspect of it and the strategy, so hopefully we’ll make a good team.”
A.S.: “After my 5 Dakars on a bike I really enjoyed navigating for Molly (Taylor) in the T4. I didn’t have the possibility to go to Dakar in 2024 so I’m happy to be going back in 2025. I have the time – I do some development work for KTM’s rally team and make some road books for them but apart from that I don’t have too many time constraints. I think Hunter has some big goals for this Dakar and he certainly has the speed. Of course what he lacks is experience, so while I might not be the world’s best mechanic, I should be able to help him with race strategy and the navigation.”
