Pink Panther Power at Dakar 2020

For the first time in history, an all-female rally team racing will compete in the desert of Saudi Arabia. Italian born Camelia Liparoti has indeed earned her place in the elite of the ‘Dakar Legends’ circle with an astonishing past performance in 6 Cross-Country Rally World Championships and 10 back-to-back Dakar completions all in her “pink panther” signature. Camelia, a great passionate of the extreme sports, has no intention of slowing down and in January she will tackle her 11th Dakar Rally with a Yamaha YXZ1000R, that is very close to the standard vehicle. Last year she was at the start of a 100% lady team, as she could count on the experience of Rosa Romero, the wife of Nani Roma. The adventure was really positive and they finished 37th of the car category. The original plan was to continue also this year, taking advantage of all the experience gained together, but unfortunately Rosa had a motorcycle incident and had to undergo a surgery to her collarbone before the start and finally Annett Fisher stepped in. The 35-year-old German is very well known in the Cross-Country Rally scene, although in a different role. Since 2012, in fact, she has been supporting the X-raid MINI Team as sports physiotherapist during FIA world cup races as well as the rally Dakar. But Annett is not only a physiotherapist. Within the past decade she gained a lot of experience on motorcycle as well as a pilot and co-pilot in side-by-sides. 2018 Annett topped her ongoing success off by finishing on the podium at the Merzouga-Rally and in 2019 she was at the start in Peru as co-driver of Andrea Meyer.

“The SSV is definitely my vehicle and I’m really happy to have switched from quad to SSV in 2018. For us and Yamaha is important to make only small adjustments and keep a reasonable budget. As for the competition, teaming up with Rosa worked really well last year. What we need to improve is our mechanical preparation. Last year we had an issue with the fuel range that penalized us. This year we made some modification and we did also the Abu Dhabi desert challenge with Rosa in order to arrive more prepared. I’m really sorry that she cannot join and I wish her a fast recovery. At the same time, I welcome the emerging talent of Annett, she knows the Dakar and last year competed with Andrea (Mayer). Annett proved to be a strong, fast and strategic driver who already managed to outperform many male competitors finishing 14th place in her first Dakar in 2019 thereby garnering the respect of many fans. It will be great to share this experience. Concerning the change of country, when the news came up, we were very surprised and together with Rosa we discussed a lot about it. We finally decided to go. This year it’s more than a Dakar, it’s a discover and we are open to a new country, a new mentality, a new culture. As a female team, we can also be an example for the women who, one day, could realize their dream to compete the Dakar Rally as we do”.
