Interview

“The Dakar is the only race, the rest are just samples”

David Megre has a score to settle with the Dakar after a frustrating debut two years ago. Having won multiple national and international races in bajas and enduro, the 35-year-old tried his hand at the world's toughest rally in 2017, but a combination of illness and mechanical problems led to him abandoning after just four stages. This year, he is back with the KTM Portugal team, determined to make it through to the finish line in Lima. David has always been a keen sportsman. He took up rugby and water skiing as a young boy, and soon followed in the family footsteps by getting into motorsport as well. He bought his first bike at 17 and went on to win the Portuguese Bajas championship on three occasions, before being crowned European Bajas champion in 2009. A farmer by trade, he is also a keen hunter who will be gunning for a successful second outing over the South American sands.

“I grew up in a sporting family and I liked motorcycles early on. I played rugby from the age of five to 21, and also did water skiing from a young age. At 17 I bought my first bike and from then on I didn't stop. A cousin of my grandfather's was the organiser of Baja Portalegre and took part in the Dakar many times, and later one of my father's brothers also did it. The Dakar is a dream for baja riders like me. But Dakar 2017 was very difficult. What happened in the fourth stage was the result of some very hard days. The day before the prologue I contracted a virus, so for the first three days I was riding without being able to eat, while having to go to the bathroom constantly. On the first stage my bike battery died and I found myself at a refuelling station in 45 degrees heat, unable to move. There were a lot of issues for a first time! This year I want to finish, first and foremost. I think that if I can get to the end and avoid any problems, I'll be happy with the result. I'm in good shape and I know the rally better. The Dakar is the only race, the rest are just samples."
