Rally raid is a family affair for the Schröders, and so it will prove again at Dakar 2018 as father Jürgen links up with son Maximilian for Germany-based outfit South Racing. The 59-year-old is gearing up for his eighth Dakar, having already raced with another of his sons, Daniel, at the 2015 and 2016 editions. After skipping Dakar 2017, Jürgen returns for the 40th edition of the rally in his Nissan Navara, determined to improve on a promising 37th place in 2015. He and 27-year-old Max have certainly had plenty of practice this year, taking part in a number of rallies on the FIA World Cup circuit and enjoying an excellent eighth-placed finish at the Qatar Cross-Country Rally. Jürgen will turn 60 just two days after the podium ceremony in Cordoba, and so making it to the finish line of Dakar 2018 would be the perfect early birthday present.
"We did several races at the FIA World Cup this year - Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Italy, Spain, Morocco - but we didn't have too much luck on our side. Qatar was ok, but sometimes we struggled with a few technical problems. I didn't come to the last Dakar, but this year will be a big challenge, especially with all of the dunes in Peru. The profile is very nice and there will be some fantastic landscapes, but the first couple of days will be tough for sure! This year I will be racing with Max, who came with me and Daniel to watch a couple of years ago. Both of my sons are also pretty good drivers - I think they want to kick me out of my seat one day! The Nissan is pretty much the same, a little bit more suspension, it's not a bad car. If we have a good run and not too many problems, I think we can finish between 10th and 20th. Closer to 10th, why not! It's a long rally so every day is its own race. It should be a good competition."
