“Our goal is to reach the finish line in one piece”
Two years after their last Dakar participation, Boris Vaculik and Martin Plechaty return to tackle the world's toughest rally again in the cars. The Czech pair failed to reach the finish line with Barth Racing in 2018, but this time around they will be competing for Boris's 3RCZ.com team, in a Ford F150 Evo prepared by fellow compatriot Miroslav Zapletal. Before making the switch to rally raid, Boris spent 15 years enjoying great success in autocross, winning championship titles in the Czech Republic and Austria and topping the FIA CEZ rankings in 2009 and 2014. He had originally planned to do Dakar 2020 with biker Rudolf Lhotsky -as Martin believed that work commitments would prevent him from participating- but that didn't turn out to be the case in the end, and Rudolf was ultimately forced to pull out altogether because of injury problems. Following a series of unfortunate events on the Dakar, which he has abandoned in all four of his participations to date, former quad rider Martin will be determined to guide Boris through to the finish line in Qiddiya, even if the pair are expecting a tough ride in Saudi Arabia. They haven't raced a great deal in 2019, although taking part in the recent Rallye du Maroc allowed them to do some valuable testing and discover some of the new roadbook innovations for Dakar 2020. Hydraulics failure on the second stage meant they had to be content with 23rd place, but Boris is confident they'll be back on track in January as they look to make it second time lucky.
B.V.: “Martin and I didn't race much together this year, but we're used to competing with each other, because he's been my regular co-driver since I started cross-country rallying. I did well with Rudolf, kudos to him. For a first time in the car, he did a really solid job, and perhaps we'll work together again in the future. Martin and I had our first big race together for a year and a half in Morocco. It was a big challenge ahead of the Dakar, a chance to test our equipment, several new team members and of course our crew. We're glad to have finished the race, and the technical difficulties showed us what to focus on in preparation for the Dakar. We've tried to get closer to the limits, we have a new engine and different suspension. Everything suggests it's going to be a very difficult race. Our goal is to gain as much experience as possible in Saudi Arabia and reach the finish line in one piece.” M.P.: “At the start of the year I didn't think I'd be able to attend the Dakar because of my job. That's why I made an agreement with Rudolf, and I thank him very much for stepping in. But in the end everything sorted itself out and I'm able to return to the Dakar with Boris. We had an opportunity to try some of the new innovations at the Rallye du Maroc. The coloured roadbook will definitely shorten the preparation time, even if the navigation will lose a bit of its charm: every co-pilot has a system that they've found and perfected over the years. I like the distribution of roadbooks before the stage. It means it will be the same for everyone and the big teams won't have an advantage.”
