Born in Portugal, Hugo Lopes grew up in Switzerland and got into motocross at an early age; his father, passionate about the sport, bought him his first bike when he was just four years old. Hugo spent his childhood and teenage years competing all over Switzerland, achieving an impressive second place at the Swiss Motocross Championship in 2001. Having watched the Dakar religiously since he was a boy, the 28-year-old is now preparing to fulfil a childhood dream by taking part in the world's biggest rally for the first time. Hugo was able to make his dream a reality thanks to the 'I believe in you' crowdfunding website (www.ibelieveinyou.ch), which provides support for Swiss sports projects. As if it wasn't enough of a challenge to be tackling his maiden Dakar, the Geneva-based primary school teacher has decided to go all out by entering the 'Original' malle moto class, which means he will be without assistance during his 5,000-kilometre adventure in the dunes.
"My father was passionate about motocross, but as he came from a big family in Portugal he didn't have the means to get himself a bike. So when I was little he asked if I was interested, and even if I was a bit overwhelmed by the noise and the bikes jumping all over the place, I said yes. I started riding motocross when I was four, and quickly began taking part in competitions and Swiss championships. "I grew up with Arnaud Tonus, who's perhaps the best current Swiss motocross rider. His father Charly did the Enduro du Touquet, racing quads on the Saturday and bikes on the Sunday. It was a tradition for me and my dad: we would always watch the Touquet in February and the Dakar in January. We didn't miss a single day of the Dakar on television. I have great memories of the rallies in Africa, watching legendary riders in action. At the time I said I would race the Touquet and the Dakar one day. I've already done the Touquet three times, so now it's the Dakar's turn. It really is a childhood dream come true."
