Interview

One of Lithuania’s Dakar pioneers

Rally raid has become an increasingly popular sport in Lithuania in recent years -but when Gintas Petrus began competing in the Dakar, not many people back home were familiar with the world’s toughest rally. In 2002, the 56-year-old and Viktoras Kastelionis became just the second crew from their country to complete the Dakar, after Romualdas Beresnevicius and Arunas Lekavicius in 2000. Gintas was a fan of the African Dakars, taking part three times before the switch to South America in 2009. He only returned in 2020 when the rally came to Saudi Arabia, finishing in 41st place with former biker Tomas Jancys. The two men will be linking up again at Dakar 2022, but only on the bivouac -the Petrus Kombucha team will be sharing their paddock with Tomas's Mediafon Team, who are competing in the T4 class. Gintas will be joined in his MD Rallye Optimus Buggy by Sarunas Paliokas, another ex-biker who did Dakar 2009 and has worked with Antanas Juknevicius at several more recent editions. Last year, Gintas took his best result to date with Povilas Valaitis, coming 31st in the cars, but rather than worrying too much about position the Lithuanian entrepreneur is just keen to enjoy another Dakar adventure.
