Interview

“The Hunter will be my friend in the upcoming Dakar”

Ping Sun is set to be thrown in at the deep end as he makes his Dakar debut in 2024. The 37-year-old from China spent his early years tearing around the desert tracks of Inner Mongolia, and eventually got behind the wheel of an SSV for his first rally. That inspired him to delve deeper into the world of rally-raid and start competing in events at home and abroad. In 2019, he took a promising fourth place at the Silk Way Rally, and now he is preparing to tackle the biggest rally of them all with the YunXiang Racing team. The ambitious Chinese outfit aren’t doing things by halves, either. Midway through 2023, they became Prodrive’s official rally-raid partners in China, which means they will be coming to Dakar 2024 with three Prodrive Hunters, one of the top-performing cars in the sport. Having taken Sebastien Loeb’s car from Dakar 2023 for a spin at this summer’s Taklimakan Rally -where he was forced to retire despite winning a stage- Ping will be getting behind the wheel of a brand-new Hunter in January. While he will be discovering the Dakar, his co-driver Min Liao has plenty of experience. The 53-year-old did his debut with Jihong Zhou in 2012 and made the last three of his six appearances with Chinese record holder Wei Han, coming as high as 10th in 2020. Ping’s primary objective is to reach the finish line in Yanbu, but rest assured that he’ll also be looking to put himself and the YunXiang China T1+ team on the map in this 46th edition.

P.S.: “There’s a big desert around my home city. When I was a young boy, I loved the feeling of driving in the desert with my friends, it was just like a roller coaster! After some years, a small rally was held there and I decided I wanted to have a go. I took part in a BRP UTV, and ever since then I’ve been very interested in rally-raid. The Silk Way Rally was a big challenge, going through three countries and past some beautiful scenery. I haven’t done the Dakar yet, but I think it will be really cool too. Min Liao and I have worked together in many rallies. He’s a good co-driver with a lot of patience and great navigation. The Hunter is a great rally car. I think it will be my friend in the upcoming Dakar! The objective is to finish all the stages and get the best result I possibly can.”
