“I think I have to try this rally thing”

Carl-Johan 'Calle' Bjerkert could well end up being a surprise package in the bikes this year. The 45-year-old Swede only made his rally raid debut at this year's Merzouga Rally, but claimed an impressive 16th place overall, showing that he was capable of keeping up with far more experienced riders. Calle first got on a bike at the age of five and has shown no signs of wanting to get off ever since. He's been racing in enduro for around 30 years, coming second at the European championship in 1998. He's also a big fan of Sweden's toughest enduro race, the Novemberkasan, which he has completed on 15 occasions and even won in 2008. Always on the lookout for new challenges, the coaching entrepreneur discovered rallying when he took part in the Portuguese championship, which soon led him onto Merzouga and now the Dakar. Quietly ambitious, he states that his principle objective is to reach the finish line in Saudi Arabia, but don't be surprised if he ends up being one of the standout rookies of this 42nd edition.

“I started racing when I was five, and since then it's only been motorbikes in my world! I've tried many other sports, ice hockey and so on, but I've always had the most fun with bikes. I started to ride motocross when I was a young boy, then at 16 I turned to enduro. Here in Sweden we have a huge amount of forest, so enduro is the most popular way of racing dirtbikes. I used to watch Dakar, and at the beginning it was a bit horrifying. But then I got older, and I'm always searching for new challenges. I'd pretty much done everything in enduro: national series, European championships, world championships. I realised the next step was navigating on the bike. I told a friend of mine, 'I think I have to try this rally thing', and he said, 'OK, I'll book the tickets!' I went to Portugal and I loved it immediately. The guys there who were more into it said, 'you have to go further, do the Merzouga!' So I did that, and I realised the next step was Dakar. I was 16th at Merzouga. It was my first rally and there were quite a few good riders there: Oriol Mena, Adrien Van Beveren, Ross Branch and Kenny Gilbert, he's a friend of mine. And I saw that I was closing up on these guys. For sure, my main goal at Dakar is to reach the finish line, but I'm definitely hoping for a good result as well. I'll try to do my best and stay consistent every day, that's the main thing. Don't overdo it. But it's hard. It's so long, so many days. Novemberkasan is the toughest enduro race in Sweden. It's always in late November, early December, so it's quite muddy. You do between 300 and 400 kilometres, one lap in the daytime and two at night. I've taken part 18 times and finished on 15 occasions. When you complete it 10 times you get a diploma and a special jacket. The race is over 100 years old and fewer than 40 of us have reached the finish line 10 times. I even won it one time. They're right I guess, but when you're into biking you want to do everything! Even at 45, the first thing I think about in the morning when I wake up is dirtbikes. And the last thing I think about before I go to bed is dirtbikes! I don't know if it's a disease or something. I'm so fond of riding bikes, I love it so much.”
