“Taking part in the Dakar is like making it to Formula One”

He’s become the new rising star of the Brazilian off-road scene. Supported by Red Bull, Lucas Moraes will be discovering the Dakar in a T1+ Toyota Hilux prepared by Overdrive. After two victories in the biggest off-road event in Brazil, the Sertoes Rally, it’s time to go one « big » step higher. After André De Azevedo became the first Brazilian to finish on the podium in his truck back in 1999, after Jean De Azevedo became the first Brazilian biker to win a stage in 2005, and over a decade after Guilherme Spinelli made it to the Top 10 of the car race, Moraes carries the hopes of his nation. For a first go, it however seems unlikely that he does as well as Leandro Torres and Reinaldo Varela winners of the Dakar in their SSVs in 2017 and 2018. The 27-year-old will be counting on the help of a former winner at his side: Timo Gottschalk who conquered his Dakar crown alongside Nasser Al Attiyah in 2011. The German has a massive experience having also competed with Carlos Sainz, Yazeed Al Rajhi or more recently Kuba Przygonski. Both men had a first rallying experience together at the recent Dubai Baja which was a good opportunity for Moraes the dunes of the Middle-East. The Brazilian who certainly has the speed faces quite a challenge: to be consistent all along the 14 days of racing.

LM: “I am very grateful to Red Bull and all the other partners for this opportunity. It’s a real dream to be able to compete in the Dakar. To compete in this event in the top category is, for a rally driver, like reaching Formula 1. That's the only comparison I can think of to explain the moment I'm living now. My usual co-driver Kaique Bentivoglio and I have been partners for ten years and will be together in several other rallies, but because the Dakar requires a completely different kind of navigation, Overdrive felt that someone like Timo could make a difference. I have never raced in a desert that is entirely made up of sand, with dunes that are 200 metres high, like we will encounter in Saudi Arabia. I still have a learning curve ahead of me. This race will be a great challenge and I am very excited to start working with my team. With Timo, we need to hone our chemistry as quickly as possible. I'm not used to receiving instructions from a navigator in English, so our work will be very important. All aspects of driving are more complicated when you are on these type of dunes. The hardest thing is to manage to cross a long string of dunes without getting lost. That is to say, following the course indicated by the navigator and not leaving it. We'll work on that and try to develop our race pace in the desert as much as possible.”
