“I always wait 11 months and two weeks for the Dakar!”
Maciej Giemza wouldn't be the first Dakar competitor to declare that the first two weeks of January are the most important of the year, and he certainly won't be the last. The 25-year-old Pole is preparing for a fourth participation in his favourite rally as he looks to improve on 17th position in the bikes last year. The Orlen Team star made his Dakar debut in 2018 -not long after being crowned FIM Junior Cross-Country Rallies world champion- and managed a creditable 24th place overall. That year he went on to claim a prestigious victory at the Qatar Cross-Country Rally and successfully defended his Junior world title. However, Dakar 2019 ended in frustration, with his engine choking in the Peruvian fesh-fesh two stages from the finish line. Saudi Arabia brought Maciej his best result to date, but he is still determined to close the gap on the top factory riders, even if he admits that a top-10 finish may be beyond him. A consistent, intelligent rider, Maciej knows there is a time to step on the gas and a time to take things easy. Part of a sporting family -his younger brother Mikolaj plays squash- he has been riding since the age of eight, starting with enduro before developing a passion for motocross and cross-country. He learned the ropes from two of the best in the business: Jacek Czachor and Jakub Przygonski, who are among Poland's best-known motorsport stars and familiar faces on the Dakar. Maciej also made a bit of national history in 2018, becoming the first rider from the city of Kielce to line up on the Dakar. Along with his childhood friend Adam Tomiczek, Maciej will be looking to make this another successful edition for the Orlen Team. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic he has managed to take part in a series of Bajas in 2020, winning races in Poland, Lithuania and Greece and placing third at the FIM Bajas World Cup. He will be off to Dubai for some long overdue desert training in mid-November as he prepares to tackle the sands of the Arabian Peninsula for the second time at Dakar 2021.
“I did a few different races this year, but not in the desert, only Baja races. I wanted to go to Andalucia but I couldn't because of Covid-19. I'm trying to ride the bike as much as I can. I enjoyed Saudi a lot last year, especially the fast stages. I was worried it was going to be the same every day, but that wasn't the case. In the first week it was more technical, with mountains, canyons, lots of rocks, tricky navigation. The second week was much faster, I enjoyed it a lot. I think this year is going to be a little different. The route will be similar but probably a bit slower. Many voices spoke up to say last year's race was too fast. But I enjoyed it a lot. I hope Dakar 2021 will be the same, or a little bit better. On every Dakar, you have to take a few more risks to get good times and positions. I was 17th last year and I want to improve my result. Top 10 is not exactly my goal, because I know there are many riders from factory teams, and they go really fast. So I don't know about Top 10, but maybe 11th, 12th, 13th… If I could achieve a position like that, I'd be really happy with my result. This is Dakar, it's a really long race and you cannot plan many things. You know, Dakar is always the most important race of the year. I always wait 11 months and two weeks for the Dakar! When I come back from one Dakar, I start thinking about the next one. Everything that happens during the year is about going to the Dakar, being on the finish line, and doing better. Life is Dakar!"
