“I think I can handle any problems”

Milan Engel is facing perhaps the biggest challenge of his impressive Dakar career at this 2022 edition. For his eighth participation, the talented Czech rider has decided to enter the gruelling Original by Motul class, which means getting through the world's toughest rally without any assistance. On top of that, the 30-year-old is still recovering from a nasty crash at the recent Morocco Rally, which resulted in a fractured collarbone, a cracked pelvis and three broken ribs. Milan has been undergoing rehabilitation in Prague as he works his way back to full fitness, and remains confident that he can do a job in arguably the toughest category of them all. He has the reputation of being a handy mechanic, and his previous experience at the FIM International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) -nine participations and three gold medals- should stand him in good stead for Dakar 2022. Given his excellent results in the bikes, which include a career-best 15th place in 2019 and 18th in 2021, Milan could also be a contender for the overall victory among Originals, depending on how well he has recovered from his injuries. Though he will mainly have to fend for himself, Milan will still be able to rely on some support from his Orion-Moto Racing Group team, who have prepped him a new KTM 450 Rally Replica with an improved engine. A multiple Czech champion in enduro, enduro sprint and cross-country, Milan proudly states on his website that his target is to win the Dakar -and he might end up doing just that in Original by Motul in 2022.

M.E.: "I'm going to my eighth Dakar and I believe I know what it takes to prepare well. I've always wanted to try Original by Motul, and together with the team we agreed that now could be the right time. It's going to be a big challenge. I definitely have a whole new experience ahead of me. I'll see whether I have to change my strategy a bit, to look after myself and the bike. But I'll figure it out along the way. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to do repairs on the Dakar, so I think I can handle any problems. I've already done ISDE, a demanding race where we have to do almost all the servicing ourselves. The important thing is to avoid getting stuck in a cycle with lots of repairs and not much sleep. That could be disastrous, because if you don't get enough sleep you risk making unnecessary mistakes. I'll only have a short preparation because of my injuries, but I'll fight to be ready!"
