“Motorbikes are part of our family life”
It has been a decade since Krzysztof Jarmuz last lined up on the Dakar, and the Polish rider is relishing the prospect of a comeback in 2020. To add extra spice to his long-awaited return, the 39-year-old will be taking part in the assistance-free “Original by Motul” class. Krzysztof began riding as a boy, kicking off with motocross before working his way up to enduro and rally raid. He enjoyed two impressive Dakar outings in South America, reaching the finish line in the top 30 in both 2009 and 2010. Since then, he has devoted a lot of time to helping his son with his own burgeoning motocross career, and also set up a company producing jeans for motorbike riders. The name, 115moto, comes from the bib number he was wearing when he got lost at a race in Morocco, but managed to survive the wilderness. In Saudi Arabia, Krzysztof will be hoping that the number 71 brings him similar luck as he attempts to make it three Dakar finishes in as many participations.
“I've been riding a bike since I was seven or eight. I did motocross first, then when I started thinking about the Dakar I did some enduro and rallies. I liked the Dakar in South America, but I wanted to try something new, so I was waiting for the location to change. I think Saudi Arabia will be similar to Morocco, it'll be a bit like riding the Dakar in Africa. I really enjoyed those first two participations. I waited a long time for my debut. I was supposed to do Dakar 2008, but then it got cancelled. I had to wait another year, so I was very happy to finally get there. And I'm very happy to be coming back now! I haven't done it for a while because my son is also a motocross rider, so I've needed time to train him and spend time with him. He's getting good now, so it’s time to think about myself again! We don't know if my second son likes motocross yet because he's only four, he's a bit young. Then again, he's already watching me and my other son in action, so we think he might become a motocross rider too! Motorbikes are part of our family life. When I thought about starting a company, I wasn't sure what to name it, and then 115 came back to me. That was my number the first time I raced in Morocco. I got lost in the desert and said to myself, if I finish without any problems, and don't die, then it'll be my lucky number! And that turned out to be the case. I couldn't find the road, night was falling, I was pretty scared, but I made it back. So 115 is my lucky number. This year at the Dakar I'll be doing Original by Motul, so I'm going for the true Dakar experience."
