Interview

“Mentally, I'm much better prepared”

Adam Tomiczek certainly endured a baptism of fire when he took part in his first Dakar two years ago. Having only discovered the discipline a few months beforehand, the Pole was ill-equipped to deal with the demands of the world's toughest rally, despite an impressive 15th place on the seventh stage. On the 10th stage, overwhelmed with exhaustion and barely conscious, Adam was found by fellow countryman Pawel Stasiaczek, who soon realised that he needed medical attention and called in the emergency helicopter. Suffering with what he described as a "mental block" after that retirement, Adam was then forced to miss the 2018 edition after a serious crash in Morocco, in which he broke his femur. Having finally worked his way back to fitness, he now feels psychologically ready to tackle the Dakar with the Orlen Team, for whom he will be riding alongside boyhood friend Maciej Giemza.

“My first rally was in 2016, in Morocco, and it wasn't too tough, the navigation wasn't too tricky. So I wasn't scared about going to Dakar 2017, I was happy to go there. It all happened so fast that I wasn't really prepared for the rally, which is so long that anything can happen. It didn't work, and they took me out of the stage two days before the finish. I couldn't even remember the last 70 kilometres, because I was so sick and tired. And last year I had a pretty big crash in testing before a rally in Morocco and broke my femur. So it was a rough few months, but what happened happened. “Now I'm healthy and feeling good, I'm looking forward to going back. Mentally, I'm much better prepared, I know what to expect. I've worked hard this year with the roadbook, with typical rally questions like how to prepare your food, how to get enough sleep. When you're doing enduro you don't have to think about that. My number one goal is to complete the rally. I feel like if I avoid big mistakes with navigation, stupid crashes and don't go crazy -just slow and steady with my pace- a result in the top 30 or 40 will be possible. And maybe I'll ride with the top guys one day. Maciej and I have known each other for over 10 years, and now two years as teammates. We want to help each other out. It's nice to know you have your teammate out there on the road!”
