“I like races in Saudi Arabia”

For many competitors, Dakar 2020 was a leap into the unknown -but Miroslav 'Mirek' Zapletal had a good idea what to expect as he returned to the world's most famous rally for the first time since 2016. The experienced Czech driver had already taken part in several races in Saudi Arabia, and used his knowledge of the terrain to claim an impressive 16th place in the cars alongside Slovakian co-driver Marek Sykora. Mirek has been coming to the Dakar for nearly 15 years, having made his debut in the final edition on African soil in 2007. He stormed to a remarkable 7th place two years later in South America, which stood as the best Czech finish in the cars until Martin Prokop came 6th in 2019. Dakar 2010 was an edition to forget, with Mirek sustaining a serious neck injury in a crash, but after lengthy rehabilitation he returned to complete the rally in the trucks in 2012. The 54-year-old has been passionate about motorsport since childhood, starting out on a bike with enduro before trading two wheels for four. Not content with just racing, he also began to produce racing cars with his Offroadsport team. In recent years, he has provided vehicles for several of the Czech Republic's top prospects, and at Dakar 2021 he will be driving an all-new Ford Raptor that was completed a few months before the rally. A familiar face on the international cross-country scene, Miroslav has been crowned national champion several times in Poland, Hungary and his native Czech Republic, while he and Maciej Marton -now a serious contender in the SSVs with Aron Domzala- came 2nd overall at the 2012 FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies. Mirek and Marek managed to do some racing in 2020, in spite of coronavirus restrictions, achieving podium finishes in Saudi Arabia, Romania and Poland. They now head to Dakar 2021 looking to enjoy themselves and perhaps upset a few of the more fancied competitors in the cars.

“In general, I like races in Saudi Arabia and I always like to take part in them. Thanks to the fact that I'd participated in races in Saudi Arabia in the past, I knew what I was going to do at Dakar 2020. I was not surprised. I knew the rocky terrain of the desert roads, and I knew there would be a problem with the tyres. I was satisfied with our final position. The track was not easy and there was huge competition. It was a success for me to be in the top 20. This year has been difficult for everyone, especially mentally. I am lucky to live in the countryside and have the opportunity to be often in nature. I keep fit by walking in the mountains. The new car was born slowly and our whole team worked hard on it. We were very happy that we managed to complete it on time, but we did not manage to test. It's the 23rd race car we've built so we've had plenty of practice, and I think everything should be fine. My goal is always the same: I want to reach the finish line and enjoy the race to the fullest.”
