“I'm confident we can secure 10th place again”

Chinese competitors have been steadily improving on the Dakar in recent years, but perhaps no driver looks better placed to mix it up with the very best than Wei Han. The 49-year-old is preparing for his fourth outing at the world's biggest rally, having set a new Chinese record in 2020 by finishing 10th in the cars. It speaks volumes that Han was disappointed with 18th place last year, after his SMG Buggy suffered mechanical issues. For Dakar 2022, he is back with an upgraded vehicle and clear ambitions of matching or improving his excellent result from two years ago. Han has been involved in motorsport for many years and set up his own team in 2008. Arguably the most talented Chinese driver of his generation, he has claimed multiple victories at his country's most prestigious event, the Taklimakan Rally, which fuelled his desire to star on the international scene. In 2016, he joined forces with SMG founder Philippe Gache, who has since been responsible for designing his buggy. The pandemic has limited Han's racing options this year, although he did claim victory at the Dahaidao Super Endurance Race. After three editions in the company of Min Liao, Han has a new co-driver for Dakar 2022: Li Ma, who guided Ping Sun to an impressive fourth place at the 2019 Silk Way Rally. The two men will be competing together for the first time, but Han still believes they can secure another historic result for China in Saudi Arabia.

W.H.: “We suffered mechanical failure during Dakar 2021, so our result wasn't very good. But we have made significant improvements to our SMG Buggy, which allows me to drive faster than ever. We've adjusted the structure of the Buggy, meaning it operates more easily at high speed and gives us more flexibility at low speed. So I'm confident we can secure 10th place again, or do even better! In 2021, we only took part in one rally, the Dahaidao Super Endurance Race in China. We relished the opportunity to have a good testing experience. I have never worked with Li Ma before. Min Liao and I have had a very good experience over the past four years, and now we are both seeking inspiration from new partners. There's no doubt that rally raid is getting more and more popular in China, thanks to the efforts of all Chinese rally racers and rally enthusiasts.”
