BIKES | Sunderland wins the 44th edition of the Dakar

He did it. At 32 years old, Sam Sunderland claimed his second Dakar title five years after his first triumph in 2017. It is a first for GasGas, which recruited him at the eleventh hour last December. It comes as a relief for the Austrians, the constructor behind the red brand, who wrested the crown back from Honda after two years. Pablo Quintanilla took second place for HRC and Matthias Walkner will represent KTM on the bottom step of the podium. Fourth in the virtual classification at the last time check, Adrien Van Beveren looks set to finish just outside the top 3.

QUADS | Giroud takes the spoils!

Alexandre Giroud just needed to make sure to finish the race to claim his first title. Following his debut in 2017, the rider from the Isère department had come close to the podium with fourth place in 2019, but he had never actually stood on it. That is now a thing of the past, and he will be standing on the top step to boot! He is the first French winner of this category, coming 25 years after his father, Daniel, became the first quad rider to finish the Dakar.

CARS | Al-Attiyah goes fourth

Nasser Al-Attiyah and his co-driver, Mathieu Baumel, have got it in the bag. The Qatari drove conservatively to retain his considerable lead over the rest of the field, particularly the duo of Sébastien Loeb and Fabian Lurquin, throughout the 44th Dakar. It is his fourth triumph in the most prestigious rally raid on Earth, putting him level with Ari Vatanen.

LW PROTOTYPES | López wins the 44th Dakar in the lightweight prototype category!

'Chaleco' López may not have won any stages this year, but his consistency throughout the race allowed him to cement his lead in the lightweight prototype race bit by bit. The South Racing captain seized the lead after stage 2 and cruised to victory despite the best efforts of his Red Bull opponents, with Seth Quintero at the helm. The winner of the 2019 and 2021 SSV races clinched his third Dakar title, the third in the T3 category.

TRUCKS | Sotnikov retains the title

Dmitry Sotnikov is also home and dry. The Russian wrapped up the special with more than a minute and a half to spare over his compatriot and teammate Eduard Nikolaev. Sotnikov has won the Dakar outright for the second time! The current leader of the T5 World Rally-Raid Championship, Martin Macík, was second on the day —the best performance by a non-Kamaz driver this year.

SSV | Jones denies Farrés!

Gerard Farrés suffered electrical problems in the finale and lost valuable time, allowing Austin Jones to finish the special 4′18″ ahead of him. The American more than made up the deficit of 1′41″ that he had his morning and is therefore the winner of the 44th Dakar in the SSV category, in which he came second last year. It was an insanely close battle between the two South Racing drivers, who scored a 1-2 for their team in the general standings.
