“We will try to get the best result among the rookies”

Guoyu Zhang and He Sha will get their first taste of the Dakar this year with the ambitious BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Corp) ORV team. BAIC is one of China's largest car manufacturers, and they will be entering no fewer than three crews at Dakar 2021, with Binglong Lu and Yangui Liu also getting behind the wheel. Guoyu is at a slight disadvantage compared to his teammates, given that his co-driver He Sha is also a Dakar debutant; Binglong and Yangui will both be accompanied by navigators with at least one participation under their belts. Nevertheless, Guoyu and He are determined to enjoy a successful first outing, and perhaps even finish as the top rookies in the cars. They will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Chinese compatriots Jianyun Jin and Wenke Ma, who finished as the top all-rookie crew a year ago in 22nd place (Fernando Alonso came 13th, but the two-time Formula 1 world champion was joined in his Toyota by multiple Dakar winner Marc Coma). Guoyu has been taking part in cross-country events for well over a decade, enjoying plenty of success on home soil and winning the T3 class at the 2015 Silk Way Rally with Frenchman Sebastien Delaunay. The 36-year-old also teamed up with He to win the 2019 Asian Baja, although their preparations for Dakar 2021 this season have been disrupted by Covid-19. Even if they know they are in for a serious baptism of fire, the up-and-coming duo are determined to do the best possible job for their team in Saudi Arabia.

GZ: “I've been fond of cars since I was a child, and I was captivated by cross-country racing 16 years ago. It's always been my dream to participate in the Dakar, and I'm very happy to be going with BAIC this year. Happiness has come so suddenly! It would be great to finish the competition, and we will try our best to get the top result among the rookies. Saudi Arabia is a very rich and beautiful country, it will be my first time racing there. I didn't take part in any races in the 2020 season because of Covid-19; a lot of events were cancelled. But I did some desert training to prepare for the Dakar.”

HS: “I got into motorsport by watching rally races on television. I saw that cars could not only drive normally on the road, but could also go off onto the muddy tracks and cross the desert. I realised that I love this sport! I'm very excited to be able to participate in Dakar 2021. I also know it's going to be more difficult than I'd ever imagined. Especially using the electronic roadbook this year. My objective for Dakar 2021 is to finish as the best rookie, provided we manage to complete the race! It will also be my first time racing in Saudi Arabia. I don't know much about the country, but I have seen some of the terrain on TV. Racing was difficult during the 2020 season. Most events were cancelled due to the pandemic, although I did have the honour of participating in the Asian Baja cross-country race with BAIC.”
