“The desert is wild, and you never know what’s waiting for you”

Zaker Yakp has been obsessed with motorbikes for as long as he can remember. As a youngster, the talented Chinese rider would sneak out of the house on his family's battered old bike and go for a spin around the desert tracks of the Xinjiang region; a perfect place for learning to ride offroad. He eventually began competing at 19 before emerging as one of China's best cross-country bikers, storming to second place at the prestigious Taklimakan Rally in 2010. The 33-year-old continued to go from strength to strength, eventually making his Dakar debut with the Wupu Dahaidao team in 2020. After finishing in a solid 42nd place, as the sixth-best rookie, he returned to claim a slice of history at Dakar 2021: 33rd place, and the best-ever Chinese finish in the bikes. For a man who had been dreaming of taking part in the Dakar for over a decade, it was a momentous achievement. Zaker now returns to Saudi Arabia for his third participation, although he warns that even with his previous experience, he is taking absolutely nothing for granted on the world's toughest rally. A native of Wubao, or Wupu -for which the Wupu Dahaidao team is named- Zaker has been given bib number 28 for this 44th edition, which by a curious quirk puts him right between elite bikers Joaquim Rodrigues (27) and Andrew Short (29). He's not seriously expecting to keep up with the factory pair, but don't be surprised if he ends up improving his own Chinese record and breaking his way into the top 30 at Dakar 2022.

Z.Y.: “I love motorcycles and my goal was always simple: keep riding until it brought me to the world stage, with remarkable achievements. I also attach great importance to enjoying myself while obtaining good results. Personally, 2021 was a memorable year. The name of a Chinese motorcyclist, Zaker Yakp, was written in the history of Dakar in 33rd place, which is China’s best-ever result in this class. That was definitely exciting for me, and what's more meaningful is that I turned 33 this year! Going to the Dakar has always been my dream. Doing events and training are the most important parts of my life. Not every biker has the opportunity to participate in the Dakar. The efforts that Chinese competitors have made in this event are terrific, and I believe they will achieve even bigger things in the future. I've been working towards the Dakar since I was a teenager. Back then, none of my friends knew what the Dakar was. I found it much harder than I expected when I was competing for the first time. Now, with two editions in my pocket, I have a better understanding of the rules and I feel more adapted to the overall environment. But the desert is wild, and you never know what’s waiting for you. Let's just enjoy it! Do you know that '8' is 'fa' in Chinese? And 'fa' implies good luck in our culture. So 28 is a great number, and I hope it will bring more luck to me and my team."
