Interview

“We’re both racers”

Driver Andrew Graham and co-driver Gavin Neate are another crew with a long competitive association -in their case no less than 20 years. The car they have entered the Dakar Classic with has been racing even longer. A 1985 Land Rover, it has been used in anger since 1990 with Andrew buying it in 2009 and converting from Rover V8 power to 5-cylinder turbo diesel. Since then its been used in a huge variety of events including gravel rallies, hill rallies, comp safaris, stage rallies, French Tout Terrain Rallies and recently on the tarmac Rally Barbados -that event indicative of a shift in emphasis from lots of small events to doing one big event year. And now their little Land Rover 90 is about make its appearance at its biggest event in its long and illustrious career: the 2024 Dakar Classic. Despite the Land Rover’s legendary status in the off-road world the model has only a modest record of success on the Dakar, though it’s sister the Range Rover won one of the early rounds. For their first outing on the Dakar Classic Andrew and Gavin don’t perhaps have the pretention of making the record books but with their long history of competition you can be sure they’ll be taking the event reasonably seriously. Andrew will also no doubt be seeing how his various products perform as his company specialises in producing and supplying bespoke intercoolers, radiators and fuel tanks for all forms of motorsport, including rally-raid.

A.G.: “Neither of us have any previous experience of regularity rallies and I let you know in mid-January if that was a handicap or not. What I do know is that my co-driver Gavin is very precise in his navigation and will embrace the concept fully. Originally, as we’re both racers, we were going to opt for the fastest average speed but talking to people who’ve participated in previous editions convinced us to lower our ambitions, especially as our short wheel base Land Rover isn’t perhaps the obvious choice for driving flat out in the desert.”
