Interview

“Always do 100%, don't leave anything on the table”

Mohammed Balooshi made history in 2012 when he became the first Emirati to take part in the Dakar, even if things didn't go quite as planned between Mar del Plata and Lima. The five-time Arabic motocross champion broke his hand and shoulder in the latter stages, and had to wait another six years to complete the world's most famous rally. He returns in 2019 with the Duust Rally Team, looking to improve on his 32nd place from last year. He has geared up for Peru with an impressive 2018 campaign, which saw him claim victory at the Dubai International Baja – where his brother Sultan came third – and secure the Bajas World Cup crown. That made him the first Arabic rider to win an FIM title in offroad rallies. Surprisingly, the 39-year-old trailblazer only rode a bike for the first time at the age of 18 and embarked on his racing career two years later, going on to star in motocross and Bajas. After emerging as his country's most talented desert rally rider, he decided to give something back by becoming a motocross instructor at the MX-Academy in Dubai, which he runs with former Swiss and European champion Chris Moeckli. In-form and confident, Mohammed is determined to make it to the finish line of the Dakar once again and keep flying the flag for the United Arab Emirates on the international stage.

"Everyone agreed that last year, the 40th Dakar, was one of the toughest editions. It was emotional for me on the finish line, because in this one, you could be out any moment, it played with your head a lot. When I passed the chequered flag on the final day it was a big weight off my shoulders. I was really happy to represent my nation in what I think is the pinnacle of motorsport, it was a proud moment. "In 2018 I enjoyed a lot of success and I'm really grateful for that. I had some ups and downs but I was really blessed with the Bajas World Cup win, another huge achievement. I'm really looking forward to Peru. I enjoy the desert, the beautiful big dunes, I love riding in the sand. It should be a lot of fun, but challenging. My number one goal is to finish the rally, number two is to improve on last year's result, 32nd. I think I'm capable of that. I was fit most of the year but I've kept training at 100%, and hopefully that shows at Dakar 2019. I have a responsibility to represent the UAE to the best of my ability, to give a little back to this country which has given us a lot. Always do 100%, don't leave anything on the table. Hopefully it comes with a better result and I can make my people proud of me once again."
