Interview

“I've been training for the Dakar all year, I haven't even had a holiday!”

Milan Engel makes no secret of the fact: his ambition is to one day win the Dakar, as he proudly announces on his official website. The 27-year-old Czech rider, who cites five-time bikes winner Cyril Despres as one of his role models, is gearing up for his fifth participation in the world's most famous rally, where he'll be looking to build on his best result to date: an excellent 30th place on his debut in 2015. The ambitious Moto Racing Group (MRG) have also signed up Spanish rider Joan Pedrero for Dakar 2019, and are hoping that one of their two talented bikers can improve on the team's best-ever finish, 18th place with David Pabiska in 2014. Milan dabbled with both enduro and cross-country earlier in his career, winning a host of national titles in both disciplines. His passion for offroad racing naturally led him to the Dakar, where he has enjoyed mixed success -two solid finishes in 2015 and 2017, and two retirements in 2016 and 2018. Last year he was running 24th when a crash on Stage 10 brought his rally to an abrupt end. The Jablonec native's hopes of overall victory may be a tad ambitious, but he has spent the whole year gearing up for Peru and will do his best to make it a memorable Dakar for both himself and his team.

“I believe it will be a good rally. Every year I always have a lot of expectations for the Dakar, and hopefully this time around I can avoid any problems with technique, navigation and crashes. I'm not putting any particular pressure on myself, I'm ready and I just want to get started. I've been training for the Dakar all year, I haven't even had a holiday! I'm really hoping to get the most out of this 2019 edition."
