Interview

“I'm super happy to be back”

Mario Patrao is finally hoping for a slice of good fortune as he returns to the Dakar in 2022, because the rally hasn't been too kind to the Portuguese offroad star in recent years. In 2020, he lost his good friend Paulo Goncalves on day seven, and was then the first rider to reach Edwin Straver after what would prove to be a fatal crash. Mario was determined to enjoy a more positive outing at Dakar 2021, but sustained a fractured femur in early December and had to pull out of the rally before it had even started. It wasn't the first time, either -he was also forced to withdraw from Dakar 2018 at the last minute due to appendicitis. The Seia native is now finally ready to make his comeback, and will be doing so in the assistance-free Original by Motul class, which he had already planned to enter a year ago. Mario is a skilled mechanic, who was on hand to help out elite teammates Toby Price, Matthias Walkner and Sam Sunderland when he was part of the KTM factory team (2017-2020). Above all, though, he is an extremely talented rider who boasts four ISDE gold medals and the biggest collection of national titles for a Portuguese biker: no fewer than 27(!), including the domestic rally raid crown in 2020 and 2021. Since returning from his femur injury, Mario has shown impressive form, with further victories at the European Bajas championship and the Tunisia Desert Challenge. He proved he could handle the kind of challenges he will face in Original by Motul at Dakar 2016, when he topped the marathon class in 13th place overall. Having also suffered a big crash at the 2019 edition, the 45-year-old knows just how treacherous the rally can be. Ultimately, he will be aiming for consistency, rather than pure speed, as he pursues three clear objectives: getting to the finish line, cracking the top 30 in the bikes overall, and making it to Jeddah as one of the top five competitors in his demanding category.

“I was very sad not to be able to participate last year, and of course I'm super happy to be back. I had a difficult 2021, with the first six months out injured, but I've been working hard to be 100%. At the moment I feel good, and I'm confident I'll do a good Dakar. The latest tests have gone well. I don't feel super fast, but I feel consistent! I'm very motivated to be doing Original by Motul. It's a very challenging class which involves lots of things: repairs, riding, bike management, etc. I hope to get a top-five finish in this first year. I used to ride for the KTM Racing team, and my aim was to help out whenever necessary. Luckily the bikes were very good, so they didn't need my help much! My main objective at Dakar 2022 is to finish, the second objective is to be among the top 30 bikes overall, and then of course to be one of the five fastest riders in my class. They are realistic goals and I think I'm up to them!"
