“I was surprised by how well it went last year”

He may be one of the most versatile young bikers in Poland, but things haven't always gone smoothly for Adam Tomiczek in recent years. By his own admission, he was ill-prepared for his maiden Dakar in 2017, which he was forced to abandon two stages before the end. Overwhelmed with exhaustion and barely conscious, he was found in the scorching Argentine outback by fellow compatriot Pawel Stasiaczek, who promptly called for medical assistance. Things went from bad to worse that year as Adam suffered a serious crash while testing in Morocco, breaking his femur and putting himself out of contention for Dakar 2018. But the 25-year-old slowly worked his way back to full fitness, gradually improving both his physical and psychological state. Determined to overcome the "mental block" left over from Dakar 2017, he ended up exceeding all expectations at Dakar 2019 with a superb 16th place overall. Having switched from KTM to Husqvarna, the Orlen Team rider has continued to go from strength to strength, enjoying solid results on the FIM circuit this year and even claiming victory at the Hungarian Baja. A former Polish champion in motocross and enduro, Adam came through the Orlen Team academy, learning the ropes from offroad stars Jacek Czachor and Marek Dabrowski. He has emerged as one of the most talented riders of his generation, alongside teammate and boyhood friend Maciej Giemza, and is now looking to achieve an even better result in this first spin around Saudi Arabia.

“In December I'll spend some time on the bike, but at the moment I'm just resting and fixing some injuries. My shoulder didn't want to cooperate during the last two days in Morocco, so I'm focusing on recovery. Hopefully I can start riding again soon, and if everything goes OK I can push again with the training. But I did 15,000 kilometres on the bike this season, so I don't have to spend too much time on it before Dakar! It's more just cruising around and having some fun. It's been a really tough season, but the results were good, everything is good. I managed to complete all my rallies. To be honest, I was surprised by how well it went last year. I couldn't do much with physical training and riding before the Dakar, so I focused on the mental side, and forced myself to take it easy every day. It worked out really well, 16th place was an awesome result for me. To make it into the top 20 again would be amazing, but the rally will be longer, and there are lots of new things to fight with. Hopefully it'll all be fine, I think I can maybe manage a better result. It's hard to say how it's going to be in Saudi Arabia, we'll see when we get there! I think the tracks will be very different from Peru. I feel like we'll be tackling different terrain every day, not always the same thing. Hopefully, for this first edition, the organisers won't have found all the trickiest places, so we can fight for some good times on the stages.”
