“It is about pleasure first and foremost”

He may have turned 51 in June, but Rafal Sonik shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. One of the most consistent performers at the Dakar over the past decade, the indefatigable Pole returns in 2018 for his 10th participation in the rally, looking to add to his historic victory in the quads category in 2015. Having already made it onto the podium in 2009, 2013 and 2014, the tenacious Sonik fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming the first Pole to win the Dakar on his Yamaha. A charismatic entrepreneur, Sonik has dabbled in a range of activities throughout his career -he even opened the first McDonald's restaurant in his hometown of Krakow- but sport has always been his passion. After trying his hand at skiing, tennis, windsurfing and aviation, he discovered his true calling with quad biking. Following several years of racing domestically in enduro and motocross, he moved into cross-country rallies and now boasts no fewer than six FIM World Cup titles. In spite of an encouraging win in Qatar earlier this year, Sonik was narrowly beaten to a seventh World Cup crown by Dutchman Kees Koolen. After a crash early in last year's Dakar, he fought his way back to fourth place, and believes that if he can avoid "doing anything stupid", he will once again be battling for victory in 2018.

“This will be my 10th time at the Dakar and the 40th edition of the marathon, so what better time to fight for a Bedouin statue? Strangely, I feel less pressure than before. I want to prove that I am a good rider and that I can still win, but my enjoyment of the rally doesn't depend on victory. It is about pleasure first and foremost! I think that if you look back over the last decade I have been one of the best in the quads, maybe the best, so why would I get stressed? There will be lots of sweat, hard work and organisation, as usual. But what links it all together is pleasure. I'm 51 years old but I'm still winning rallies, and some of them are very tough competitions. So I won't give up for many more years, depending on what shape I'm in. I don't do this for money, I do it for passion. We have the same quad - with a few improvements - and the same team, and we are all very motivated. We are looking forward to the desert stages in Peru at the beginning. It's about pleasure and hard work, and it's obviously a challenge for everyone, but we do it for passion.”

Sonik abandona

Rafal Sonik, ganador en 2015, tira la toalla. Pese a una fractura de tibia/peroné, el piloto polaco terminaba con valentía la etapa de ayer. Sin embargo, hoy se ve obligado a abandonar.
