“I think we can do a great job”

Vaidotas Zala heads to Dakar 2022 with a new sponsor but the same desire to make his mark in the cars. In 2020, the Lithuanian and his former co-driver Saulius Jurgelenas took a sensational victory on the first ever stage in Saudi Arabia, later saying it “put them on the map” in the rally raid community. Unfortunately, a mechanical issue on the final day dropped them from 15th to 26th place, although worse was to come at Dakar 2021. With Saulius sidelined by spine trauma, Vaidotas linked up with highly rated X-Raid co-driver Paulo Fiuza, who had previously worked with the likes of Orly Terranova and Stephane Peterhansel. However, they were almost immediately let down by a damaged clutch, which forced them to abandon the rally on day two. Vaidotas is delighted to be returning with Paulo for Dakar 2022, and to have the backing of new title sponsor Teltonika Racing, whose support should enable the 34-year-old to enter a number of rallies at this year's inaugural FIA Cross-Country World Championship. That should provide a new challenge for the Vilnius native, who has already won several national titles in traditional rally on the Lithuanian circuit. He has been competing in the Dakar since 2016, failing to finish his first two editions due to mechanical issues with his Seat, but then switching to a Toyota Hilux and coming as high as 12th in 2019. This will be his third outing in the Mini John Cooper Works Rally, which has a new and improved engine for Dakar 2022.

V.Z.: “Teltonika Racing coming on board is big news for us. Hopefully it should open up some new opportunities over the next three years. We only used to do Dakar, plus classic rallying as a kind of training regime. Now we hope to be more involved in rally raid in the future, especially when the cross-country world championship is launched next year. We still have the same car, but we've upgraded to a single-turbo engine, so it should be easier to drive in tricky Dakar conditions. We're looking forward to the dunes. At Dakar 2021 we had a problem with the clutch on the first stage, which ended up costing us an engine and ultimately the race. Last year we entered with quite ambitious goals, pushing to the max every single day. I think this year we're going to be a notch more conservative and just aim for the finish. The focus is to do the rally without any problems or issues. Of course, Paulo doesn't let me cruise around! He wants to push for a proper result. He's been doing Dakar for many years with really fast drivers, and he's quite open about it, he doesn't want to be too far away from the top guys. So we have to keep our pace up. I like working with him in the car and I think we can do a great job. We have to aim for the finish and then think about the result, because two years with a problem is not acceptable for anyone.”
