“It's going to be the toughest thing I have ever taken on”
David McBride has become a familiar name on the international rally raid circuit over the past 25 years, and yet the 52-year-old will only be tackling the Dakar for the first time in 2020. Born in Belfast, he was still a baby when his family moved to Australia, and it was there that he learned to ride a bike with the help of his father Bill, a keen road racer. It was then onto Dubai for a first taste of motocross and desert riding as a teenager, which eventually led to competitive racing. Having stayed in the region, David has taken part in events such as the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and the UAE Baja Championship for many years, finishing as high as second in the former and winning the latter in 2004. In 2017, he also came second in the FIM Veteran's Cross-Country Rallies Trophy, behind Kees Koolen but ahead of former Dakar winner Rafal Sonik. An experienced and talented rider, David has always had one eye on the world's most famous rally, so when it was announced that the 42nd edition would be held in neighbouring Saudi Arabia, he jumped at the chance to finally get involved. He has even decided to spice up his maiden participation by riding in the Original by Motul class, which he believes is closer to the original spirit of the Dakar.
“My father was a road racer, and we emigrated to Australia in 1968 -I learnt to ride there when I was five or so. When we moved to Dubai in 1978 there was a lot of desert, so I just started riding out the back of the house. I progressed to MX when I was 15 and then started doing longer desert runs on the off weekends. I've been thinking about doing the Dakar for a long time, I tried many years ago but could never raise the funds to do it. This year we just decided to make the commitment as it's so close. I've never ridden in Saudi Arabia at all, but it looks very similar to the UAE and Oman so it should be very good. It's going to be the toughest thing I have ever taken on, physically and mentally. The goal is to get both myself and riding partner to the finish, in relatively one piece! I think Original by Motul is the proper way to experience the Dakar, like it was originally. I know it's going to be really difficult, but if I get to the end it will be some achievement.’

Fin de trayecto para McBride
David McBride no verá la llegada de la etapa en Riyadh. El inglés, que participa en su primer Dakar, se va obligado a renunciar después de 349 km tras un problema con la suspensión de su KTM. Exasperante.
