"The chance for the podium is quite good"

Dakar 2019 | Stage 9 | Pisco > Pisco
January 16 th 2019 - 14:03 [GMT -5]

Matthias Walkner finished fourth in the penultimate stage, 3’29” behind Michael Metge, to consolidate his third place in the general classification. The defending champion's 40-minute margin over Andrew Short should be enough to put him on the podium in Lima tomorrow.

"Everybody thought the first guy did a good job, but in the end there was chaos. The first guy got lost and we followed him, it was really strange. We all got confused searching for a waypoint. Finally I found it and we arrived in a small group. It seemed an easy day, but it wasn't. I think there was more to lose on a day like this than to win, so I just tried to stay with the top guys in front and do nothing stupid. The chance for the podium is, I think, quite good, but for the first two [spots], the stage is too short. Anyway, I'm happy with my Dakar."
