The title defender finished the special behind his teammate Eduard Nikolaev, who burst back onto the scene after a one-year hiatus. Only Kamaz managed to place trucks in the top 4.

"It was a short stage, not too fast, with sand tracks and dunes here and there. We remained cautious, we just needed to make it to the finish. However, I did experiment a bit with the truck because we haven't got sand in Russia. The next few days have longer, much tougher stages in store."
