BIKES | Sunderland regains control of the Dakar
On completion of stage 8, Sam Sunderland has regained the lead in the bike category general rankings, making it the 6th day in this position for the GasGas rider. He has even managed to increase his lead on the end of the special and now lies 3’45 ahead of Walkner and 4'43 ahead of Van Beveren. Pablo Quintanilla, 4th in the general rankings, has moved to within 5'30'' of the leader thanks to his 2nd place on the day’s special. The other Honda rider, Joan Barreda, is 5th, 14"38'' behind the leader. Santolino has moved into 6th position but the gap between the top of the rankings has increased threefold. The Sherco rider now trails the new general standings Sam Sunderland leader by 21'09''. Mason Klein, who could already be called the revelation of this 44th edition of the Dakar, achieved the day’s fifth best time, 8'08'' behind the winner and now occupies 10th place, 35'26'' behind the Englishman, and three minutes behind none other than Toby price! Privateer Štefan Svitko is in front of the Australian, in 8th place, 27 minutes behind the only official GasGas rider left in the race.
BIKES | Melot wins in the Original by Motul category
In the unassisted bikers’ category, Benjamin Melot has won a second consecutive special. He has overtaken Charan Moore in the general rankings to climb onto the third step of the provisional podium, 1 hour and 27 minutes behind Arūnas Gelažninkas and a little more than half an hour behind Milan Engel.
CARS | Ekström wins, Loeb regains time
Mattias Ekström has won the day’s special, his very first on the Dakar. He is the second Audi driver to win this year after Carlos Sainz. The Swede finished 49’’ ahead of his team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel. Sébastien Loeb finished third on the day’s podium, three seconds ahead of Carlos Sainz. More importantly, Loeb climbed back up the general rankings to come to within 37’58’’ of Nasser Al-Attiyah. Yazeed Al Rajhi also lost time today and now trails Al-Attiayah by 53’13’’.
QUADS| Giroud pips Medeiros at the post
Alexandre Giroud has deprived Marcelo Medeiros of victory by reaching the finish 48’’ ahead of the Brazilian. The Frenchman has enjoyed an excellent day in terms of the general rankings because his main rival, Pablo Copetti, has lost more than 12 minutes!
TRUCKS | Win number three for Sotnikov
Alexandre Giroud has deprived Marcelo Medeiros of victory by reaching the finish 48’’ ahead of the Brazilian. The Frenchman has enjoyed an excellent day in terms of the general rankings because his main rival, Pablo Copetti, has lost more than 12 minutes!
LW PROTO | 8 for Quintero!
Seth Quintero has one for the eighth time on this edition of the Dakar on completion of the day’s special. The American has finished with a lead of almost 12’ over Sebastian Eriksson, who himself managed to regain time after a tricky start. Russian Pavel Lebedev finishes on the third step of the day’s podium. As a result, Quintero is closing in on the record… All he needs is two more stage victories to equal Pierre Lartigue in 1994.
SSV | A new 1-2 for the Goczał brothers!!
On completion of the day’s special, Marek and Michał Goczał have achieved their third 1-2 finish of the year (after stages 1A and 3). The two Poles have shared the day’s podium with Austin Jones. The American still leads the general rankings, with an advantage of 6 minutes over Gerard Farrés and a little less than a quarter of an hour over Michał Goczał.
