“The Dakar is a dream for all of us”
Jacek Bartoszek was just days away from making his Dakar debut in 2020, when the doctors put his dream on ice: due to a latent knee injury, he was unable to travel to Saudi Arabia! A year after the bitter disappointment of that 11th-hour withdrawal, the 46-year-old returns to finally get his first taste of the world's toughest rally. Even if used to tear around the local fields on his brother's MZ 250 as a boy, Jacek's passion for motorbikes only really came to him as an adult. Having studied as a lawyer in Lublin and set up his own practice in Warsaw, he discovered offroad racing around 15 years ago, spending a decade competing in trials alongside enduro superstar Tadeusz Blazusiak. He then met two of Poland's biggest rally raid legends, Marek Dabrowski and Jacek Czachor, who encouraged him to enter his first rally. He has gone on to develop a real knack for the discipline, posting solid results both at home and abroad. More importantly, his knee has now recovered sufficiently for him to be able to finally line up at the Dakar. Jacek will be riding with Dabrowski and Czachor's DUUST Rally Team, which has enjoyed plenty of success in recent years. Marek's 19-year-old son Konrad Dabrowski will also be a part of the team, along with Kuwaiti Mohammed Jaffar, and the trio of rookies are hoping to enjoy a memorable maiden outing in Saudi Arabia.
“My main activity is working as a lawyer. Riding is my passion, I picked it up as an adult. I had a crash on the streets 15 years ago, so I decided to go offroad, starting out with trials and competing very seriously in the Polish Cup for 10 years. In 2017, I took part in the entire Polish Cup season and finished 2nd, and then came 3rd place in 2018. The Dakar is a dream for all of us, but let's be honest -a lawyer with two seasons of competition under his belt probably isn't ready for it! So I did the 2018 Merzouga Rally in Morocco, part of the Dakar Series, and finished in the middle of the standings. I did it the following year and improved my position by about 20 places. Unfortunately, after a final training session in the United Arab Emirates in December 2019, it turned out that I had a knee injury."
