Interview

“A new challenge for me”

You don't need to delve too deep into Max Hunt's history to work out what attracted him to the Dakar. A born thrill seeker, the 35-year-old Englishman has taken part in a host of extreme sports over the years, including skydiving, paramotoring and wingsuit base jumping. He also holds a helicopter pilot's licence and won the British U13 water-skiing championship as a teenager. Max began riding motorcycles at the age of 10 and worked his way up to the British Superbike Championship, until a serious crash in 2011 spelled the end of his road career. Undeterred, he continued to seek out adventure - and his love of travel and high-octane sports led him to the Dakar, which he completed in 2017 and 2018. This year, Max has been getting to grips with a new discipline, flat track racing, and even took victory in the sixth and final round of the DTRA Flat Track Championship. He will be joined in Peru by his brother Harry, who will be driving a car; the two Hunts had planned to team up at Dakar 2017, but Harry broke his back in a crash in Morocco several months before the rally. Having improved from 52nd to 37th in his two participations so far, Max is setting himself an additional challenge by competing in the gruelling 'Original' class in 2019.

“This year I've been doing a lot of flat tracking, and the DTRA Flat Track Championship, it's been awesome. We went into it with no idea what we were doing, just for fun. I loved the idea of it, coming from superbikes, and I was surprised by how technical it was. It's been a real learning curve. It was tough at the start of the year, but we ended up winning the final round, it was brilliant. Still alive and all that!” “I've done the Dakar a few times, but I wanted to do it again this year because Harry is back in a car, and doing malle moto will be a new challenge for me. The little badger's coming out, my wife Billie will be there as well – she's actually pregnant now, so she won't be doing the support like she did in the first two, which is a bit of a shame. They'll be following it with my mum. The first goal is to finish, and the next thing is to come as high as possible, so we'll see how all that goes. I can't wait, it should be a mad one.”
