Interview

“Such an iconic event! We are aiming the podium!”

Raised in a family of motorsports fanatics, it was bound to be. Molly Taylor will be one to watch in the T4 SSV class as she takes on her very first Dakar. At only 33 years of age, she’s travelled the world and competed in some legendary races. It all started with traditional rallies, first on home soil then in Great Britain, Europe (ERC) and all the way up to WRC, before becoming the first female and youngest winner of the Australian Rally Championship. Her first taste of the desert came during the recent Extreme E season where she was able to have a first taste of the Dakar through chats with the likes of Sebastien Loeb, Carlos Sainz, Cristina Gutierrez or Laia Sanz. The Dakar will be a whole new world for Molly who will be part of the Can-Am Factory South Racing team. To prepare for the rally, the Sydney born driver took part in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and Rally Ha’il. A good learning experience alongside co-driver Dale Moscatt who returns to the Dakar after finishing 32nd of the rally back in 2016 with Peter Jerie.

SK : “I come from a family of motorsports. Ma grand-father was in rallying and my mother was a 4-time Australian champion as a co-driver. I started at the age of 15, so I can say that motorsports are my life. I had always been thinking of doing more off-road. The Dakar was a race I used to watch. I remember sitting on my couch seeing what people had to go through in the middle of nowhere. I eventually got connected with South Racing and competed in Abu Dhabi and fell in love with the discipline. The Dakar is all new for me. It’s so different. It’s just a massive adventure and challenge. It’s exciting but pretty daunting. When I announced that I was doing the Dakar, the reception back home and from my fan base was amazing. It’s such an iconic event. Initially my goal is to get to the finish but we aim the podium. Having a mission to win would be naive even if I’m very competitive. The dynamic is very different driving a T4 SSV. It’s super fun and you adapt rapidly so it gives you confidence. I’m actually not too worried. Of course it’s a physical challenge but I’m super interested by the test.”
