“I'm confident a final place in the top 10 is possible”

Ricardo Porém will be stepping things up a gear as he returns for his second tilt at the Dakar in 2020. The talented Portuguese driver had a solid debut in the SSVs last year, although he had to settle for 11th place overall with Jorge Monteiro after losing a lot of time on day seven. His performance clearly did enough to impress the Borgward Rally Team, who have signed him up as their second driver alongside two-time Dakar winner Nani Roma (bikes in 2004, cars in 2014). The 30-year-old is thrilled at the prospect of racing alongside last year's runner-up, and is confident that he and younger brother Manuel can bring home their Borgward BX7 DKR Evo in the top 10, despite some seriously stiff competition in the cars. Ricardo's father got him into motorsport at the age of just four, and though it wasn't until 18 that he started racing cars, he quickly showed a serious aptitude for it. Portuguese offroad champion in 2014 and 2017, he also won the iconic Baja Portalegre four consecutive times, starting with a victory alongside Manuel in 2014. Even at just 28, Manuel has picked up plenty of co-driving experience over the past decade, ever since guiding Ricardo to the Portuguese T2 title in 2010. He will be able to look to his big bro for advice on his Dakar debut, with Ricardo convinced that the new Saudi Arabian setting will make for a more even playing field. Nani and his co-driver Dani Oliveras are no doubt delighted that the promising Portuguese pair have their back as they all look to make it a successful 42nd edition for Borgward.

R.P.: “I thought that Dakar 2019 was a very positive debut. Racing in an SSV allowed me to understand how a complex rally such as the Dakar unfolds over many days of competition. My co-driver Jorge Monteiro did a great job and that was crucial, as it enabled us to fight with the leading drivers. On the seventh stage we had an unexpected setback and lost a lot of time. But we still managed to achieve our main goal, which was to finish the race and learn as much as possible. This year, Manuel and I are lucky enough to be racing together. My brother is a very professional and capable co-driver, with a lot of rallies on his sporting CV. I'm very confident that we will make a great team, both inside and outside the Borgward. The opportunity to race on the Borgward Rally Team came to me through an invitation from Wevers Sport. I'm really looking forward to starting this Dakar, especially because I'll be sharing the experience with one of the world's best rally raid drivers. Nani is a fantastic person, a true professional with a lot of experience, from whom I also expect to learn a lot. My ambitions for Dakar 2020 are to help our team get the best possible results. If we manage to achieve that then I'm confident a final place in the top 10 is possible. I think the change of scenery is another great challenge to add to all the others you would expect on a race such as the Dakar. Saudi Arabia is an unknown country for most of the competitors, and maybe this new variable will have a balancing effect on the overall competitiveness of the rally. This country is showing the world that it is capable of putting together memorable events, and for me it's a pleasure to be a part of it by competing in Dakar 2020.”
