QUADS | MEDEIROS PICKS UP THE WIN
Marcelo Medeiros claimed his ninth career Dakar stage win. Juraj Varga surged near the end, but he finished 2′40″ behind the Brazilian. Laisvydas Kancius edged out Manuel Andújar for the podium at over 10 minutes down.
BIKES | BRANCH TAKES STAGE 1
It is official! Ross Branch has nabbed his fourth career Dakar stage win. The Botswanan was leading the special when he screeched to a halt to assist Tosha Schareina after the Spaniard crashed. Although he crossed the finish line in sixteenth place, 16′10″ down on the provisional leader, Ricky Brabec, he got 25 minutes back and toppled the Honda rider from the summit of the leader board. At the end of the day, Branch put 10′54″ into Brabec and 11′19″ into Mason Klein.
ULTIMATE | DE MEVIUS WINS IN ULTIMATE
It only took two days for Guillaume de Mevius to clinch his first Dakar stage win in Ultimate. Rivals such as Carlos Sainz tried to turn up the heat on him, but the Red Devil —a recent arrival from the Challenger class— set an infernal pace. In the end, De Mevius romped home with 1′44″ in hand over the Spaniard.
CHALLENGER | ERYK GOCZAŁ MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW
Austin Jones ultimately failed to take the lead in the finale of the special. Even worse, the defending champion shipped 10 minutes to Eryk Goczał, who claimed his second victory today. However, it was a close call for Eryk, who finished just 19 seconds ahead of his uncle Michał.
SSV | VARELA WINS IN SSV
After Reinaldo Varela, it was the turn of his son, Rodrigo, to win the Dakar. Just like De Mevius in Ultimate, it took him just two days. The Brazilian seized the lead at km 367 and never looked back. Gerard Farrés set the second provisional time in SSV, more than 12 minutes behind Varela. Sara Price, a Dakar rookie like Varela, is currently third, just under 18 minutes down.
TRUCK | VAN KASTEREN MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW
Janus van Kasteren crossed the new finish line, at CP2 (km 281), with the fastest time. The Dutchman was in a league of his own today, producing a virtuoso performance to clinch his second stage of the year.
