“It will be wonderful”

Dusan Randysek's sixth outing on the Dakar could be his most memorable yet. To celebrate his 50th birthday, the adventure-loving Czech has decided to enter the Dakar Classic category with his 18-year-old son Frantisek. Dusan will be the spiritual father of the Vintage Racing Team, who have entered no fewer than four Land Rovers at Dakar 2022. Three of them, Series II models from the early 1960s, will be driven by family crews: Dusan and Frantisek, another father-and-son duo in Petr and Tomas Fiala, and brothers Albert and Stepan Pance. Dusan acquired his vehicle shortly after completing his only Dakar in 2010, in the bikes. The multiple Czech champion also participated in the SSVs in 2016, having helped to develop an early model of the Wildcat from as early as 2013. At Dakar 2021, Dusan took over from his brother Robert as the driver of the PH-Sport assistance truck, helping out the likes of Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi, Cyril Despres and Kris Meeke. As for Frantisek, he has been accompanying his father to races since he was a boy, and boasts impressive navigations skills despite his young age. While his main pursuits are acting and art, he still enjoys racing with the old man -and after all, who would want to be stuck at home in January? Dusan knows the Dakar Classic won't throw up quite the same competitive challenges as the main categories, but he is still very much looking forward to this 44th edition.

D.R.: “I still have bigger ambitions than sitting in an old car and driving a regularity rally, but this year is a bit different. I'll be going with my 18-year-old son, Frantisek, and it's like a 50th birthday present to myself. It's going to be a wonderful and unforgettable team building experience. The idea popped into my head over breakfast at the last Dakar, and I put Petr Fiala on to it as soon as I got back. He picked me up at the airport, where I gave him a Dakar Classic t-shirt and more or less told him he had to do it! He'd been talking about the Dakar for a few years but hadn't dared to enter. We'll be going in expedition mode. It's all about not getting left behind and keeping the car alive. Driving for 300 kilometres a day is going to require some willpower! You have to know the car and you have to know exactly what it can do, so you don't get stuck. Of course, if we're taking part, we're interested in the result. The Dakar Classic certainly isn't about speed, it's a bit of a racing game, but it can still be quite fun. It's like playing cards for matches, rather than money, but you still get nervous with every match you have to give to someone. For me it will be wonderful, simply because I'll be driving with my son in this old car.”
