“I only want to remember the good times. It was a fantastic experience, a real adventure. People looked after me as if I was the winner of the Dakar. And now I’m back. The Dakar is like my Olympics. It’s like entering the stadium. Now I have to clear all the hurdles. When I was 17 years and the fastest ever in Africa (110m hurdles), to quit so easily when on top of my game (due to Apartheid), just imagine how easy it would be to save myself the embarrassment just to be the worse rider at the Dakar...again! I was three times at the Dakar and have no finisher T-shirt... Yes, the Dakar is an expensive holiday for me. There are racers at the Dakar, and one adventurer. An adventurer that is trying to better his skills and fitness a little. If I finish the Dakar, I will be last or second last and will close the chapter...”
