Guillaume De Mevius: “I wasn’t expecting it”

The young Belgian driver is taking part in his first Dakar in unexpected conditions and has already grabbed his first stage victory.

“My first Dakar didn’t start as I had planned, because I had to find a new co-pilot, Kellon Walch, at the last minute, then we broke our differential case and lost seven hours stuck in the dunes, so it’s not the beginning to the rally we were hoping for. Yet, today we’ve won the stage. I wasn’t expecting it because we drove sensibly throughout the stage, concentrating on avoiding navigation mistakes and not pushing too much. We even stopped to give a helping hand to one of our team-mates! By starting at the back of the field, we thought it would be a disadvantage, but in fact it turned out alright. I’ve always watched my dad taking part in the Dakar. He won several stages in the overall car category, so that will be my next objective”.
