Although he is unknown to fans of the Dakar, the name of Julien Toniutti resonates with fans of road races. A many times French road rally champion, the 39-year old rider has also distinguished himself on the Isle of Man with a fine performance on the legendary Tourist Trophy. The taste for another type of challenge convinced the native of Lyons to sign up for the tracks and dunes of Peru. “One year ago, I hadn’t ever raced at a single all-terrain event,” he explained after finishing his first special in 112th position. “Neither motocross, nor enduro… I come from a completely different sporting world, but because I like challenges, I agreed to get involved in the adventure that my sponsor Moraco suggested. Finishing the Dakar, the hardest all-terrain race in the world, after having done the Tourist Trophy was something that appealed to me”. To obtain a starting place, Julien began by completing the Merzouga Rally in Morocco. Although today it is a big leap to make, the Yamaha rider is tackling it with serenity and lucidity, just as he did on his first day in South America. “The first special was a good introduction to the rally,” he said. “I took it easy. My objective is to get to the finish without taking any risks and to look after myself and the bike. We’re here to try and experience a wonderful adventure”.
