“The tougher the better!”

On the 2018 Dakar when he first appeared on the event, his motto was “race for tomorrow” and at the time he thought it would be a one off experience. His adventure to the finish turned out to be an eye-opening and successful endeavour. Indeed Hennie De Klerk, driving alongside Gerhardt Schutte at the time, flew to an amazing 28th overall position earning him the best rookie trophy. And that of course gave the South-African quite some appetite. Sadly an accident in his team while preparing for the 2019 Dakar decided him not to return out of respect for his injured team member. Two years after his memorable performance De Klerk returns. A successful businessman and part time bee keeper, he’ll be discovering Saudi Arabia in a new Nissan Navarra. At his side he’ll also have a new co-diver: Johan Smalberger. Hoping for a difficult Dakar, the goal will this time be to reach the Top 20.

H.D.K.: “I’m the only one in the family who drives car competitively. I started by racing on the track in a Porsche 924 and won the South African championship in 2010. And then I switched to off-road. The Dakar is the reason I started competing in the South African championship. I had that iconic picture in my head. Despite not knowing about it, the Dakar was my ambition. The first time is the most memorable one and finishing best rookie made it even more special. There were so many challenges and we had no idea what to expect. You get the big picture but you don’t know exactly what to expect. But it was one of the proudest moments of my life. We were going to come back but during our preparation in Namibia, one of our crews had a bad accident. A team member was badly injured so I decided to cancel. So to this new country with new challenges. 99% of the people would never get to see some places where we’re going if it wasn’t for the Dakar. It’s important to meet new cultures and live a new adventure. And the tougher it is the better. If it was easy, everyone could do it. It has to be hard. I really hope it’s difficult. The goal will be to reach the Top 20. Anything below that would be great.”
