“Aim for a top 25 finish”
Driver Erik van Loon made his debut last year when the Dakar made its maiden trip to South America. Erik, together with co-driver Marc Wams, struggled with technical problems from day 1 but as the race progressed so did team van Loon. With determination they beat the odds and made it to the restday in Chili. Then they really picked up the pace and broke in to the top 20 for the first time. However disaster finally struck. A broken gearbox left them in the Argentinean desert only 2 days from the finish in Buenos Aires.
Nevertheless it was enough for Erik to show his potential and… to catch the famous Dakar virus! For this year van Loon puts his faith in the Mitsubishi L200 EVO. A car that has shown it’s strengths over the year’s driven by the experienced Tonnie van Deijne. Erik van Loon will depart in his trademark white/orange Van Loon Racing colors, but will team up with Team Deijne to form a strong Dutch presence in the upcoming Dakar.
Joining Erik van Loon as a navigator is well-known Dakar competitor Eric Verhoef. Erik & Eric have been preparing as a team for the last two year’s in several Baja type events, but due to a serious injury right before the start of the 2009 edition Verhoef had to miss out on last year’s rally. Now he’s back and up for the task to guide van Loon to a good result in Dakar 2010.
Still the main goal for Erik & Eric is finishing the race. But with the potential of the L200 EVO in their mind, they will aim for a top 25 finish.
