“Deep inside the top 10”
Almost unoticed. Slowly but surely, Aussie Bruce Garland moved his way up the standings to finish the 2009 Dakar in a fine 11th spot overall. But the ambitous businessman wants more. “Because I didn’t quite make the top 10 last year, I’m still classed as an ‘amateur’, so we want to be the first ‘amateur’ in the top 10, but we’re thinking deep inside the top 10”.
Behind this brash attitude hides a true rally-raid lover. Bruce has only participated in two Dakar rallies. The first time was back in 1998. He will remember the start from Versailles for a long time, on New Years day, surrounded by “thousands of fans at 3 o’clock in the morning.” He is preparing to live similar feelings in Buenos Aires…But Bruce also has some painful Dakar memories, especially the death of friend Andy Caldecot. “That is some of the reason why I needed to come back.”
With fellow Aussie, Hiroaki “Harry” Suzuki, Bruce has competed in rallies all over the world for the past 15 years. Desert rallies and South-Asian odysseys have quenched their thirst for adventure. And there was no way this duo was going to pass up a chance to do the South American Dakar.
As a true Aussie, Garland has another goal in mind: “To beat our old mate, Alfie Cox from South Africa – Australia has to beat South Africa at something!”
