« I would be very happy to be in the top 10 »
At just 27 years of age, Nicolas Mislin already has a CV worthy of a veteran racer. Trained in all sorts of circuit racing, the Frenchman was quickly attracted to the sand of the Dakar, which he first discovered on the 2002 edition. Those who deemed him to be a virtuoso behind the wheel were not far off the mark. He arrived at the banks of Lake Rose in 10th place overall in his first try. “I believe I was lucky that year”, Mislin remembers humbly. His next two participations ended in retirement.
Since then, Mislin returned to his first love and has been a regular podium finisher in circuit endurance races, but rally-raiding has remained in the back of his mind and he promised he’d be back with new ambitions. Then came the announcement from Mitsubishi, following the 2009 Dakar that it was pulling out of the sport as a ‘factory’ team. This bad news immediately put some pretty big ideas in Nicolas Mislin’s head. He wasted little time in taking possession of the Lancers to give them a new destiny following a terrible first outing in South America. “We purchased the entire structure, including both the cars and the staff. The sporting side of the team will be run by Dominique Serieys, with whom we effected an ambitious recruitment”. Indeed, the five new version Lancers that are now petrol powered, will be driven by Orlando Terranova, Carlos Sousa, Guilherme Spinelli, Miguel Barbosa and the young boss himself, who will wear two hats in Argentina and Chile. “It will certainly be hard to be 100% focused on my race, but that is the goal. In terms of where we finish, seeing how dense the competition has become, it will certainly be harder to finish in the top ten than it was in 2002, because there are a good 20 competitive cart. So, I would be very happy to do it.”
